| Cigar Art The passion for Cuban cigars
seems to have reached a fever pitch. The Center for Cuban Studies Art Space has been
collecting art related to the Cuban tobacco industry, and specifically the cigar, for many
years. Now we have gathered together these wonderful examples of (mostly) contemporary art
to present a truly exciting exhibit.
The art in this exhibit includes tiny photos of glamorous women which were inserted
into cigarette, cigar and tobacco packets at the turn of the century in Cuba; painted
Cuban cigar boxes by Antonio Rodríguez Hernández; paintings, drawings, prints, posters
and sculpture by Cuban artists Kdir (and Kdir and Emilio together), Antonio Rodríguez,
Reina Ledón, and many others. In addition, the exhibit includes old cigar bands, cigar
labels and cigar boxes from Cuba.
The exhibit consists of 50 pieces of artwork and can be rented for one-two weeks at a
cost of $1,500-$2,500. The cost includes round-trip shipping from New York City and
insurance en route. Insurance on the works during the exhibit must be paid by the renting
institution.
Accompanying the exhibit are books about cigars and cigar art, and postcard and
notecard reproductions of 19th century cigar labels which can be sold during the exhibit.
