The works in this exhibit represent only a small
portion of the more than 800 paintings, drawings, and graphics in the Art Space archive.
Center director Sandra Levinson began collecting the works as soon as the Center opened in
1972. Most of the early works were donated to the Center by artists who saw the Center as
a repository for their works which would make it possible for them to become known in this
country. Institutions in Cuba, such as the Cuban Film Institute, donated film and
political posters. Photographers donated photos for the archives as well as for use in
Center publications. All became part of the Centers Lourdes Casal Library.
After the Center spearheaded a successful suit against
the Treasury Department in 1993 to make the importation and sale of original art from Cuba
legal, the Center organized its Art Space archive and began collecting art for exhibit and
sale.
Although most of the works in this exhibit are for
sale, the prices listed are for insurance purposes. The exhibit consists of 40 works

weeks for $3,000, three weeks for $4,500 and three weeks for $6,000. The cost includes
round-trip shipping costs from New York City and insurance en route. Insurance on the
