"Images of Che in Cuba," An exhibit of photographs and artworks of Ernesto "Che" Guevara in Cuba, 1956-1965.

This marvelous exhibit was prepared to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Che Guevara in Bolivia in October 1997. Seventy photographs, paintings, posters and other artworks depict the Argentine guerrilla fighter--and iconic images of him--during his years in Cuba (1956-1965).

The original photograph of the most famous image of Che Guevara, that taken chefidel.gif (45788 bytes)from a photograph by Alberto Korda in 1960 and repeated throughout the world on everything from buildings to t-shirts, is included in the show, both the original photograph and the cropped version which became the iconographic image. There are also other more casual images by Korda--Che playing golf, fishing with Fidel Castro, reading on a fishing boat.

Some of the best-known images by Osvaldo Salas and his son Roberto Salas are in the exhibit: Che together with Fidel and Raúl Castro ("Tres hermanos") at the Havana airport; Che on a rest break during voluntary work ("Che constructor"); Che's profile wreathed in cigar smoke.

The exhibit also includes posters by several of Cuba's best-known poster artists, including René Azcuy, Félix Beltran and Raúl Martínez; paintings by Raúl Martínez and others, and photographs by both Cubans and non-Cubans showing Che's image in contemporary Cuban settings. Among the non-Cuban photographers are Andrea Brizzi (Italy), Luc Chessex (Switzerland), Gianfranco Gorgoni (Italy) and Janis Lewin (U.S.). All but Chessex are based in the New York City area.

All of the artworks are part of the Art Space's permanent collection. However, those works that are starred (*) may be ordered from the Center for Cuban Studies.

The exhibit was first shown at the Metropolitan Arts Center in New York City from October 15 to November 3, 1997. The exhibit is for rent with all 70 images for $3,500 for one month, which includes round-trip shipping and insurance from New York City. The renting institution is responsible for insuring the works while on exhibit. A smaller exhibit consisting of 35 images is available for $2,000.

The exhibit comes with Che notecards (with envelopes) and posters on consignment that can be sold during the exhibit, as well as a videotape of shorts about Che Guevara which can be shown.
