About this exhibit Most of the artists in this wonderful exhibit are unknown outside of Cuba. In January 1996, Olga Hirshhorn, the well-known Washington D.C. collector, and I organized the first Center for Cuban Studies art tour to Cuba. Thirty of us crossed the island, from Santiago de Cuba to Pinar del Río and points in-between. That tour has been followed by others that brought us back to some cities and on to new towns. On the first trip, we saw an amazing array of "naive" art, most of which was unknown even inside Cuba. On successive trips, we made a conscious effort to collect this naive art because so little has been seen in the United States. This exhibit brings together a collection of the best works we've gathered in the last two years. We are especially in debt to the contributions of the members of the Bayate Group in the tiny community of Mella outside of Santiago de Cuba, and to the many artists who have led us to others.
The exhibit consists of 50 works of art selected from the 70 listed below. Most of the works are fairly small and we add to and subtract from the exhibit as works are sold and/or new ones acquired. Selection for a traveling exhibit is always made on the basis of the quality of the works, of course. However, if you prefer more works by fewer artists, or fewer works by more artists, you can let us know, and we'll try to accommodate your particular requests.
The exhibit can be rented for one month for $3,500. If you want the exhibit for a shorter or longer period of time, adjustments can be made. The cost includes round-trip shipping costs from New York City, and insurance while en route. Insurance on the works during exhibition must be covered by the renting institution.
